Welcome to Day 1 of our PLC

We had a great day of discussion! Thank you for your efforts and as usual your great senses of humor! (No, I do not need a kitten or okra)

Please respond to one of the two questions or both:
1. How can projects help my students meet standards and develop 21st century skills?
2. How can I use projects to enhance student learning?

While doing projects, students can develop real-world, 21st century skills such as working well with others, making thoughtful decisions, taking initiative, solving complex problems, learning to self-manage, and communicating effectively. These are skills that will also enable them to be successful in the work force once they leave school.

Projects can enhance student learning by engaging students in real life relevant activities. Involving students in meaningful tasks improves learning and increases student achievement.

By integrating projects that relate to real life can help my students develop 21st century skills. Students will also be more engaged when it relates to their life. The projects must have a purpose and be assessible.

Projects help to enhance student learning because students are at the center of their own learning. Students become engaged in the learning process and are able to see real world connections to the curriculum. This is especially important for young children. Project based learning will help touch all learning styles within the elementary classroom and therefore allow students more opportunities to master skills.

Projects will help students learn the skills set forth in the new Alabama Technology Course of Study. Students should be able to investigate w/ higher order thinking skills, not just perform a technology task.

I can use projects (wiki, blog) to motivate students to read and leave comments on the library website, which in turn will hopefully motivate others to read.

How can projects help my students meet standards and develop 21st. century skills?

Projects can help my students meet 21st. century skills through research and hands on learning. When learning is done hands on and not lecture style the students then has a purpose for the project. While working on the hands on projects students are developing real-world skills that they will use later in life in THE REAL WORLD. Later in life they will need these project skills for in the work place. They will learn to work well with others, but also they will need self- management skills. They will need to know how to communicate effectively and take initiative in these projects and in the work place. Making thoughtful decisions and solving complex problems is another way of developing 21st. century skills through these projects and again in the work place.
Project based learning will lead to more retention of these 21st. century skills through the use of hands on learning.

Even though I think this will be a lot of work, my students and I will benefit from me creating a project-based learning unit. Students are more in-charge of their learning. It requires higher level thinking. The students will have meaningful tasks to complete. Hopefully, students will remember more of what they learn since it is by discovery.
I also enjoyed the fellowship! Laughter is a great stress relief!

Projects can help my students meet standards because they actively have to use critical thinking skills. Students are not able to give a yes, no, or a 1 sentence answer. At times they will have to talk with someone else by researching and communication.

The students will learn 21st century technology skills and be able to utilize them in the real world. These projects will allow to understand and be able to use technology once they leave the classroom and enter the ever changing technology world.

Teachers using hands on projects which include up to date technology will require the students to develop real life 21st century skills. The day of traditional teaching, in my opinion is gone. We must use hands on projects to develop 21st century skills.
